Accelerate your legal education with hands-on work in a boutique commercial law firm in the Sydney CBD.

  • Paralegal opportunity for a current JD student
  • Minimum 4 days per week
  • Engaging, challenging work in a small team environment
  • No previous experience required

We're looking for a law student to support our commercial and construction lawyers. We are a small, highly regarded commercial firm in Sydney. We are also one of the oldest firms in the country.

About the role

The role will expose you to a variety of commercial legal work, mostly in the commercial construction sector.  This is the perfect way to put your academic studies in context, and kick-start your career.

People in this role previously have commented on how the job has helped improve their understanding of the law, improved their marks and also resulted in them becoming more passionate about a career in commercial/construction law.

You will work closely with our lawyers, and benefit from the support that comes from a small, close-knit team environment.

You will perform a variety of tasks under the supervision of a more senior lawyer, such as:

  • legal research,
  • reading contracts and preparing explanatory material (such as contract administration flowcharts and forms),
  • preparing administrative documents for commercial transactions, and
  • assisting in the preparation of blogs and other marketing initiatives.

You will work directly with lawyers of different experience levels, including the most senior lawyers in our firm.

Being a small firm, there will also be an expectation that you will be willing to pitch in to help with miscellaneous jobs and initiatives from time to time, as required. This is another way that you will be able to make yourself a key part of the team.

No previous experience in a law firm is required.

What we offer

As a small firm, we offer a number of things that bigger firms can’t. A supportive, collegiate environment. Reasonable hours. An opportunity to be involved and make a real difference (both internally and externally). A genuine opportunity for full-time work as a solicitor immediately following your admission.

You will receive hands-on support from the firm's other lawyers, each of whom will be committed to ensuring you succeed in your role. You will be joining a small,  established team of high-quality young lawyers.

We offer things most other small firms don’t. High quality, engaging work. A fantastic (and growing) client base. An inclusive, transparent culture. Advanced IT systems. The ability to work from home seamlessly as you like, and not just during COVID. A fantastic, light-filled office near Circular Quay.

In short, it's a firm where our people enjoy working. We're confident you will too.

What we're looking for

The single biggest thing we're looking for is a strong cultural fit, and that's what we'll be looking for in the interview process. (You should be able to get a sense of who we are by looking through our website.)

You will need to have completed at least 1 year of your law degree and be a motivated, self-starter.

To succeed in this role, some of the other things you will need are:

  • a curious mind and you will need to be a strong analytical thinker;
  • effective oral and written communication skills;
  • a willingness to take initiative and to also take ownership of the things you are working on;
  • a keen attention to detail and a passion for high quality work;
  • advanced computer skills and an interest in technology; and
  • most importantly, a desire to learn new things and make a difference.

If this sounds like you, we encourage you to apply by completing the form on this page. No recruiters please.

Interviews will be conducted with the lawyers that you will be working with. If you have any questions, please contact Claudia D'Ettorre at claudia.dettorre@turtons.com
